So much of our cultural life is contained within electro-magnetic aether. There are moments of life in between as electrons flutter and zip past. A fragment of a conversation. A bank statement. Photos of lunch. Outside some birds hunt insects in the morning sun.

AN EXPERIMENTAL PLAYLIST

I made this list so you could hear these sounds. It’s about an hour long. You may enjoy setting aside time to look out the window or draw or do some light task while you listen. Whatever is comfortable for you. Some sounds will only be audible on nicer speakers than a laptop or phone.

  1. Bridget Chappell is an artist and organizer based in multiple locations on stolen land. They founded and run the award-winning program Sound School that works to center marginalized voices in media arts, work with young musicians behind bars, and make experimental sound technologies to challenge police sirens and State sonic weapons.
  2. Benjamin Mayock is a composer and sound artist living in northwestern Vermont. Text, music, and sound captured from lakes, rocks, forests, and fields make up the source material for Mayock’s work. He is a co-founder of Community of Sound in Burlington, Vermont.
  3. Rajna SwaminathanRajna Swaminathan performing mdrungam for an audienceRajna Swaminathan performing at CoS:INE Series in Burlington, Vermont. is an acclaimed mrudangam artist, composer, and scholar. In her music and research, she explores the undercurrents of rhythmic experience and emergent textures in collective improvisation.
  4. Pamela Z is a pioneer of live digital looping techniques, she processes her voice in real time to create dense, complex sonic layers. Her solo works combine experimental extended vocal techniques, operatic bel canto, found objects, text, and sampled concrète sounds.
  5. Clara de Asís is a Spanish composer and performer based in France. As well as guitar as her main instrument, she uses different combinations of objects, materials and sound sources, incorporating electroacoustics and minimal approaches.
  6. Sandy Ewen’s audio practice focuses on extended guitar techniques, improvisation, graphic scores and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her unique approach to guitar incorporates a wide array of implements – railroad spikes, sidewalk chalk, threaded bolts, steel wool and other items become an arsenal of abstraction.
  7. The Honourable Elizabeth A. Baker eschews the collection of traditional titles that describe single elements of her body of work, referring to herself as a “New Renaissance Artist” that embraces a constant stream of change and rebirth in practice, which expands into a variety of media.   9. Gahlord Dewald is an experimental musician and as such frequently finds himself writing about himself in the third person. He is a co-founder of Community of Sound in Burlington, Vermont.
  10. Vicky Chow is the pianist for the Bang on a Can All-Stars, piano duo X88, New Music Detroit, and has collaborated with other ensembles such as the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). Her recorded work can be found on the Nonesuch, New Amsterdam, Tzadik, Cantaloupe Music, Innova, Hinterzimmer, and AltaVoz labels.
